Unexpected Skin Changes in Perimenopause (and what you can do about it!)

With the long-list of symptoms and changes that your body experiences throughout perimenopause, and continuing well past post-menopause, there’s no surprise that our skin is also impacted! We connected with Trudi Jaye, Co-Founder of Retreatment Botanics to chat about the unexpected changes to your skin throughout this life stage.

Retreatment Botanics globally awarded skincare range was co-founded by Australian icon and wellness advocate, Olivia Newton-John and skincare expert Trudi Jaye.

Why this life stage impacts your skin

Throughout perimenopause, your hormones are fluctuating in an ongoing endeavour to reach the post-menopause equilibrium. Throughout your 40s, 50s and beyond, your oestrogen levels decline, which can result in dramatic changes to your skin.

Common changes to your skin throughout perimenopause

As your oestrogen levels start to decline throughout perimenopause, your skin may start to show signs of ageing, with it feeling less firm and supple. Another common skin symptom during this phase is dryness - many women experience the ‘tight and dry’ sensation where their skin just can’t get enough hydration and moisture.

Some women also experience pesky breakouts returning for the first time since being a teenager, this is associated with the fluctuating hormones and stress can also impact this.

You’ve reached post-menopause, but your skin is still changing

Can you believe that you lose 30% of your collagen in the first 5 years post-menopause? This decrease is attributed to the decline of oestrogen as it’s a key hormone in stimulating collagen production. This loss of collagen causes the skin to lose its elasticity which is why many women start to experience sagging and thinning. Often sensitivity issues start to arise as the skin’s natural moisture starts to diminish too.

Post menopause, collagen continues to decline as part of the natural ageing process, although the rate may not be as rapid as during the transition into menopause. While we can’t avoid this process, we can help to boost collagen production through skincare and collagen-rich foods.

Tight, dry & thirsty skin!

Oestrogen helps maintain skin hydration, so it’s no surprise that with lower oestrogen levels, the skin becomes drier and less elastic, further contributing to signs of ageing. Throughout perimenopause, it’s SO important to supplement this lost hydration with skincare.

Finding skincare that has high-performing hydrating ingredients that soak deep into the skin to replenish loss of moisture at the cellular level is crucial - too often skincare isn’t formulated with bio-available ingredients which results in the products sitting on top of the skin’s surface instead of absorbing deep into the cellular level.
